How we decide what to plant

When we go to plant our gardens we think about what we like to eat.  Here are some ideas for gardens:

Salsa garden: tomatoes, onions, garlic, tomatillos, cilantto, regular peppers (bell, banana, pimento), jalapeƱos , cherry peppers.

Herbal/tea garden - raspberries (I love to dry the leaves too), mint, catnip, borage, basil, oregano, chives, chamomile, dill, parsley, sage, thyme, lavender, lemon balm, and rosemary.

Salad- lettuce (variety), spinach, radishes, carrots, beets, cucumbers, beans.

We don't usually grow potatoes or peas because they are so cheap in the stores.

Extras  - zucchini, watermelon, variety of pumpkins, corn, sunflowers, zinnias, variety of squash.

Fruit - boysenberries, strawberries, raspberries, peach tree and two apple trees.

I did get an eggplant plant today because it was on sale .  -smile-

We love it when the grandkids come out.  They came to see the gardens, animals and learn to crochet.  They are working on single crochet stitch and making a scarf.  They had been practicing just make a chain before.

Yesterday we got a downpour of much needed rain and the last for a while.

Sunday relaxing and a blueberry dessert.

Sunday morning feeding. Everyone came running in.

Summer came in … now family with the lambs.

I couldn't find the hens... they were harassing the hens, not letting them come out of the coop. I am going to separate them.

Summer spooked me. I turned around and she was right behind me, nudging in on me.

Then we went for our Sunday walk. It was a gorgeous morning.

Later the clouds rolled in and we had tornado warning causing our radios to go off. We did have an active rotation for about 20 minutes but then it grumbled off to the east of us.

The sun came back out and I got more peppers, flowers and tomatoes planted. Dude went in behind me and loosened the soil

Stupid me forgot my sunscreen and got burned. I am usually very cautious about making sure I have it on, it is so important!

After heading east the storm came back around. We are expecting storms off and on tonight. It did help to cool the day off.

Dude went to work in the greenhouse and I went in to make blueberry crisp. It is the season of berries and they are beautiful. My mom used to make crisps and cobblers during the spring and summer months. I tried to remember how she made them.  Hope it does hers justice.
I was making this for Dude and my dessert tonight.
I melted an 4 tablespoons of butter with 1/4 cup sugar.
Added  2 cups of blueberries and a squirt of lemon juice.
Boil done.

In the mean time I mixed 1 cup oats with 1/3 cup of brown sugar.  Add 4 tablespoons of butter, a tablespoon of flour and mix with your hands. We had leftover mixed nuts so I added about a 1/4 cup of those chopped.

Back to the berries... add a teaspoon full of corn starch and mix well.   Cook until thickens.

Pour into small ramekins or pots that have been sprayed with cooking spray.  Top with the oat mixture.  Bake at 350* for 20-25 minutes. I topped with the leftover topping after I took out of the oven. To cool it off we topped with ice cream.

Dinner was leftover pork roast I had froze a few months early and sliced for stir-fry and cantaloupe.

Garden updates and Sewing Saturday!

We put a gate around our "back yard" so the dog would quit digging, eating everything we plant and grow some grass. Dude spent most of the day working in the greenhouse planting seeds while the rest of us were sewing.

We've come a long way!

Our flowers look great. These are Columbine, the Colorado state flower. They do very well out here.

Our raspberries and boysenberries came back this year.

Still picking radishes and new beets coming up next to them.

We have tomatoes inside and outside the greenhouse.

Today was our sewing group's meeting day.  We gather once a month to sew, cross stitch, embroider, quite, and crochet or knit. It is one of my favorite days of the month.

Shelly is doing a large crochet/knit afghan.

Daisy is embroidering a quilt.

Diane's amazing cross stitch.

Catherine is helping my mom with a donation project embroidering newborn clothes.

My mom embroidering.

Dawn is working on a hand pieced quilt... all those little pieces are by hand.

Me trying to decide what to work on...

Still deciding.

Came up with these two to work on.

This is how far I got.

And Dawn got pretty far too!

Then it was time to go out and see what the animals were up to.

That was our Saturday. How was yours?

Time to read while Dude enjoys a movie.
