Sunday - yogurt, a great sale, and geese

We had to head south today to help family but before we did I put milk in the oven to make yogurt.
It's simple ... I only had a small amount of raw goat milk.  Heat it on the stove to 110* in a pan on the stove.  That isn't very warm so stay close.  In the bottom of a clean jar put a large heaping tablespoon of plain full fat yogurt.  Put the lid on and wrap the jar in a towel.  Turn on the light in the oven and put the jar in the oven.  Don't turn on the oven.  Leave for 12-18 hours.
When we go to bed it will be wonderful yogurt.  I like this better than store bought... no additives or sugar.

I put notes all over the stove so I don't turn it on.

My sister-in-law gave us this picture of their family farm they grew up on.  Dude loved telling me about every inch of the place.

On the way home we came across a feed and grain store going out of business.  We got all this stuff at 65% off !

Since we rode in the car so much I worked on a rug.

...and finished my little man.

We were going to the separate all the birds when we got home and good thing.  One of the turkey chicks went ballistic on one of my geese. He was attacking her and pecking her neck.
I took the geese and let them play in the tub for a bit.

Since I talk to them every day , we have become a bit attached to each other.  I love these two!

The animals have been a bit strange today.  For some reason the horses switched barns on their own, we found Felonious the goat in the teenage  chicken's house, Wilbur the lamb will only sleep with Summer the horse and the cat says ...goodnight - smile

Tuesday morning and Patty Pan Squash

We are back on track today. Yesterday Dude found a used truck for sale, in good condition and off we went to buy it. I am so proud of him. It was a struggle at first to get him off the idea of using credit cards and saving money but he did and bought the truck outright.

Milked goats this morning and made yogurt.

Yogurt is wrapped up and ready to ripen in a lit oven (not turned on just with the light on)

Eggs collected.

Patty pan squash are so cute. I used to think they were called Peter Pan because they don't look like they wanted to grow up.

Today I decided to make a fun recipe from them. Remember, my recipes have to fast to make before heading to work.  Here it is...Cute off their lids and scoop out the seeds. Drizzle with oil and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Bake at 400* for 15 minutes.

Cook up some stove top stuffing as directed adding 2 cloves of garlic and 1/2 chopped onion that have been sauted. Plus a can of drained stewed tomatoes.

Stuff the patty pans and top with cheese. I love Irish Cheese.

Bake until melted.  I baked  them at  350* for 3 minutes.

They turned out so good.

10am  time to water and sew a wee bit while catching up on Vikings. I need to hurry to return it to the library soon.

Making yogurt from raw goat's milk

I gave yogurt my first attempt and it turned out far better than I imagined.  It is very easy and similar to making chevre but without all the cultures and rennet.

Here is how I made raw goat's milk yogurt.

Ingredients
half gallon of raw goat milk
small container of plain yogurt (to use as a starter)

Heat the milk to 110*. 110* isn't very hot so keep an eye on it.

While that is on the stove I washed out the jar and put 3 heaping tablespoons of plain yogurt in the bottom of the jar.

Then fill the jar with the warm milk. Then stir, stir, stir!

Wrap it snug in a dish towel. This will keep it warm.

Turn on the light in the oven, just the light. Pop the jar in the oven and leave it there for 12-18 hours.

I had  to head to work later so I put notes all over the oven. I didn't want cooked yogurt or a mess in the oven. These are the notes I use when making chevre so I just used them. When not using them I tape them to the inside of the cupboard.

This is how it looked before refrigerating.

I added honey from our hives and nuts to take to work. It was so good.

I did have time on this day to meditate and play my flute outside. The great part of living in the country no one can hear how bad you sound.

Looks like my playing startled Angelo my goat.

Oh and I left my candle outside. Dude says I will be reading sideways for a while.

Have a great day!
